Motor Vehicle

This is practical and engaging course is designed for students aged 16 or older who have completed Level 1 Motor Maintenance, or have some prior knowledge and experience of vehicle maintenance and repair, and looking to continue their education.

The Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course is aimed at providing the key knowledge and skills typically required to progress onto Level 3 Vehicle Diagnostic or an apprenticeship in Light Vehicles. With this qualification you could look forward to a future career as a technician in the vehicle or engine maintenance and repair sector.

You will gain a breadth of knowledge and understanding of motor maintenance and repair with lessons focused on the following units:

1. Health and Safety – the risks/hazards/precautions when working on motor vehicles and associated equipment.
2. Tools and Equipment – the correct use of hand tools, exhaust gas analyser, brake roller tester, ramps, trolley jacks, tyre machine, wheel balancer, laser wheel alignment and Snap-on diagnostic computer.
3. Engines – how to strip and rebuild engines to industry standards. How to test ignition and fuel systems, and evaluate findings.
4. Transmission – understanding how clutch, manual transmission and final drive operate.
5. Brakes – the removal, inspection, evaluation and maintenance of hydraulic disc and drum brake systems.
6. Steering – how to remove and refit components, and adjust steering angles to manufacturers specification using laser wheel alignment.
7. Suspension – understanding the range of suspension types, and the removal, inspection and refit of suspension dampers, springs and top mounts.
8. Wheels/Tyres – understanding legal requirements and how to inspect and evaluate tyre condition, then replace and balance tyres using industry standard machinery.
9. Electrical – understanding electrical principles and testing methods within series and parallel circuits. How to use electrical equipment including multimeter, inductive ammeter, high capacity drop tester and oscilloscope.
10. Inspection – a summary of all the units above where you will fully inspect a vehicle and compile a report to mirror what is carried out in the real working environment.

This course will be delivered in a variety of ways including formal lessons in the classroom, online lessons via Teams, directed self-study and practical demonstrations in the workshop. You will also have access to the automotive e-learning software developed by Electude. Information is delivered in an interactive game-like style which makes components and their operation easier to understand. It is also accessible online anytime, anywhere.

At BLC you will benefit from studying at our Specialist Training Centre on the Harpur Hill Industrial Estate. These industry standard facilities offer a real-world learning experience where you will be working on cars donated to us by Toyota and using tools donated by Snap-On. We also have our own MOT test centre and a wide variety of engines, gearboxes, steering and braking rigs for you to study and work on.

Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair

If you achieve this qualification, you could progress on to;

• Level 3 Vehicle Maintenance and repair,
• an Apprenticeship in Light Vehicles,
• full time employment in the light vehicle service maintenance and repair industry within a main dealership or independent garage.

Additionally, you will gain core skills and knowledge that are transferable within other aspects of engineering including: Motorcycle, Light/Heavy Goods and PSV.

You will be assessed on your knowledge through a combination of written assessments, practical assessments and online examinations.

You will need a minimum of GCSE Grade 4 in both Maths and English as well as some relevant experience in this subject which will be discussed with you during the interview.
