Barbering

This programme is aimed at adult learners who wish to start their career working in the Barbering industry. 

Learners undertaking this course will need to have a keen interest in learning barbering creative skills and developing their communication and customer service skills 

There are options to suit individual needs and aspirations – and if you are already working in hairdressing, you could develop your skills to become a senior stylist. 

This course is the gateway to working in a barbershop or in other sectors and industries with the need for a barber such as entertainment and media, travel or fashion. You’ll learn your skills in our commercial hair salons. 

The course is tailored to meet students’ needs and is a solid starting point for learners starting out in the male grooming industry. Learners are encouraged to undertake a work placement in a Barbers or unisex salon. 

The Level 2 Diploma in Barbering is a nationally recognised qualification, which provides a detailed understanding of the industry and covers a range of skills and knowledge within the following units:  

• Advise and consult with clients 
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp 
• Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work 
• Cut men’s hair using basic techniques  
• Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques 
• Dry and finish men’s hair 
• Create basic outlines and detailing in hair 
• Perm and neutralise hair 

The course comprises of mandatory and optional units that are continually assessed via observed work, oral questions, online tests and assignments. On completion of the programme, you will need to show competence in a broad range of barbering skills, be able to demonstrate considerable responsibility for your work and have the ability to work independently. 

During the programme you will work in our commercial salon within the campus, working on clients offering you relevant work experience. 

This programme uses a wide range of learning activities designed to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for future career success. 

This will be through practical activity within our professional salons with knowledge and theory embedded throughout. Practical skills will be demonstrated to you be our highly skilled tutors and you will be supported through working on headblocks, peers and clients to develop and build on these skills using professional salon equipment. 

Your learning will be supported by guest speakers, and trips and your learning journey will be fully supported by a personal tutor who will be able to support and track your individual progress. 

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering 

You could progress onto the Level 3 advanced diploma in Barbering or a Foundation degree in Salon Management 

To gain your barbering qualification, assessment is ongoing throughout your course.  

You will work commercially within a realistic working environment and be continually assessed using a variety of methods, including practical observations, written evidence and oral questioning. You will also complete online multiple-choice questions for each unit to demonstrate the underpinning knowledge. 

Your progress will be supported by your tutors and tracked throughout. 

3/4 GCSE grade C/4 or above including Maths & English or Level 1 Hairdressing or relevant industry experience – Desirable but not essential.
