When Dustie joined Buxton & Leek College as a 16 year-old school leaver she never dreamed that she would be studying at degree level.
Dustie, now 24, enjoyed her studies in Child Care and progressed on to Foundation Degree level. She fits her college work around a full time job as a senior early years practitioner at Buckinghams Nursery School, Buxton Road, Leek. She attends evening classes at the Leek campus from 4pm until 8pm each Monday and her employer supports her studies.
“I first came to Buckinghams Nursery School on a placement organised by Buxton & Leek College as part of my Level 3 Diploma in Childcare. I did two other placements during the two-year course.
“I have really enjoyed my work at Buckinghams Nursery School because it’s so rewarding watching the children grow and develop and knowing that you have helped support them in their development.
“I’ve worked in several areas of the nursery including the baby room and I’m currently with two and three year olds in the early years unit. I never dreamed I would be studying at degree level but it’s really enjoyable to learn all about the theory of play and how children learn. I have my own mentor here in the nursery so I’ve always got someone to turn to and I have the support of lecturers in college too.”
