Kim decided to move over to our Apprenticeship provision when not finding the right fit within her course. She explains her journey below.
‘I originally started full time college and enrolled on the level 2 beauty therapy course. Whilst I enjoyed the course, I felt that something was missing as I didn’t feel I was getting enough hands on industry experience. So I spoke to the tutors throughout the year about the benefits of applying for an apprenticeship for my level 3 course. They guided me and helped me select the best option that suited me. They were very helpful in helping recommend placements they thought best suited me.
For my level 3 year, I went through the apprenticeship route, where I’ve received a lot more on the job experience, still fully supported by all my college tutors, who came out and assessed me when needed. They also make sure they’re always available to speak to you for any queries or worries you have. I was still attending college for 2 days a week. This meant that whilst I didn’t get as much time in college, because it’s a more hands on route, I had to complete some of my college work in my own time at home, again fully supported by the tutors.
Doing an apprenticeship route has helped me progress faster within the industry as I was able to complete level 3 treatments and assessments immediately after learning them, which in turn enabled me to complete more treatments than you would if you were doing full time college. Compared to people doing the full time college route with a part time job in the industry, I was able to perform level 3 treatments at my work placement and college, compared to being a full time college student where you can’t perform the treatments at your place of work as you’re not covered to do so.
Also by doing an apprenticeship route you are sometimes guaranteed an employment at the end of your course, but most apprentices find it easier to get work as you have the industry experience that the full time students won’t have had. This also means applying for jobs is easier as you have experience behind you.
Since qualifying I have completed more courses which have enhanced my working knowledge and experience.
If you’re thinking of doing an apprenticeship or not sure about this route, I highly recommend speaking to your tutors for advice and guidance’.
Remember there are always options for you here at BLC! And there is still time to apply!
