Nineteen-year-old Amanda decided at an early age that she wanted to be a hairdresser when she left school and has never wavered from her ambition.
In fact she made an early start on her training while still a student at Leek High Specialist Technology School. At the start of year 10 Amanda opted to study for a Level 1 NVQ in Hairdressing by attending Buxton & Leek College’s training salon for one day a week while studying for her GCSEs. Now, she is employed as an apprentice and studies each Monday at college.
“I have enjoyed my training, especially while I’ve been working. You get to know your clients and soon build up your confidence. We have a mix of clients here so I completed a barbering course while I was at college so that I’m confident with gent’s hairdressing too. I have learned by watching the other four hairdressers in the salon at work and I’m looking forward to picking up my Level 3 certificate and knowing that I’m fully qualified to do my job, best of all I know that there’s a job waiting for me when I’m qualified.”
