YOUNG designers of the future will be showing off their skills at Leek School of Art’s free end of term exhibition next week.
Finishing students from Foundation Diploma and BTEC Extended Diploma courses in Art and Design will have their work on show all week in the new William Morris Building, off Stockwell Street. Exhibits range from a chandelier inspired by nature to cushion covers and lampshades printed by student Elle Foreman who is moving on to study textile design at Nottingham Trent University.
Tutor Suzanne Mellor explained: “We have a whole range of work on show at this year’s exhibition and we are very proud of all of our students, all of whom have been accepted into their first choice universities.
“There will be no paintings on show but the exhibition gives people a great chance to tour our new Art and Design facilities and to appreciate what a lot of careers a qualification in Art and Design can equip people for. We might be a small college but we have great facilities and would like to think we’ve inspired the next James Dyson.
“Everything we use in daily life started in the hands of a designer and I hope that this summer exhibition will show visitors that coming to Leek School of Art is not something you do just as a pastime but it could lead to a great career. The UK is renowned for its creative industries and many great artists and designers started out here at Buxton & Leek College.”
Among those exhibiting next week will be Jake Collier from Leek who has built a chandelier inspired by nature and is moving on to study product design at Nottingham Trent University. Katy Goodwin, from Alton, will be off to the same university to study theatre design and will be exhibiting costumes she has designed inspired by the tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Angela Heap from Brailsford is also off to Nottingham Trent to study architecture while James Pike from Brown Edge has chosen the same course at Falmouth University.
Students will be showing off their achievements from Monday June 20 until Friday June 24 when doors will be open from 9 am until 5 pm and guided tours of the facilities and course information will be available.
