Business students from Buxton & Leek College proved just the ticket when staff at Leek’s Thomson travel agents were looking for fresh ideas to promote their latest young and lively `Scene` holidays.
With the holidays being aimed at the 18 to 25 age group, the class of second year students studying for their BTEC Extended Diploma in Business jumped at the chance to organise a promotional event at the travel shop in Derby Street, Leek. And staff at the Leek shop were pleased to share the benefit of the students’ expertise in social media.
Maria Bainbridge, Assistant Manager at Thomson Leek, explained: “While we can no longer offer students work experience in our shop, we thought that an event promoting our Scene holidays for young people would be a great chance for students to work on a real life project and give them something to put on their CVs when they start looking for work.”
Helen Finney, Lecturer in Business Studies at Buxton & Leek College, said: “Planning and delivering an event is one of the modules on the BTEC course and it’s been great for the class to work on a live event with a local business.
“The students are organising a promotional event at the Leek Thomson shop running from Wednesday February 8 until Friday February 10 and they have designed flyers to be given out at the shop in advance as well as creating a Facebook page and posters to promote it.
“The idea is to get young people visiting the Leek Thomson shop rather than booking their holiday on the internet.”
Student Phoebe McDonald, aged 17, from Longsdon, was so impressed with the Scene holidays that she booked one herself! She said: “I am really enjoying working on this project and think the Scene holidays look great so have booked to go to Gran Canaria with Thomson in July. I am hoping to go to university to study Events Management so helping manage a real life promotion has been great experience.”
February’s event will feature light refreshments and special offers including low deposits on Scene holidays to young and lively resorts worldwide ranging from Ibiza to Thailand.
