BEAUTY students at Buxton & Leek College are training at one of the best facilities in the business.
Buxton’s Devonshire Spa at the University of Derby’s Buxton Campus has been named the best day spa in the country, beating luxurious facilities including The Urban Retreat at Harrods, in a nationwide competition run by Professional Beauty magazine.
A delighted Karen Wardley, Curriculum leader for Hair and Beauty at Buxton & Leek College, said: “The spa underpins the real world working which is threaded through our Further Education delivery in Buxton.
“This prestigious commercial environment allows all our Beauty and Spa students to work and undertake training to prepare them for progression either on to a Bsc Hons Degree in International Spa Management at the University of Derby’s Buxton Campus or into successful employment
“The award received reflects the high standards delivered to the students of Buxton and Leek College.”
Students use treatment rooms above the Devonshire Spa to offer a wide range of hair, beauty and holistic therapy treatments including manicures, facials, hair styling, electrical treatments, aromatherapy and reflexology.
It was the second time in the finals for the Devonshire Spa, which began operating in 2006 – the same year as the campus was officially opened by Prince Charles.
Merging education by industry professionals with a “classroom” which is also a real facility, was one of the reasons why Swedish spa expert Anna Bjurstam described the University of Derby’s spa degrees as the best in the world.
Sian Jones, manager at the Devonshire Spa, said: “This is an incredible achievement for the Devonshire Spa and everyone who has worked so hard along the journey. The spa strives to become a centre of excellence, benchmarking the industry leaders of the future.”
