SATURDAY May 21 promises a Red Letter Day for art lovers when Leek’s new School of Art William Morris building throws open its doors to the public as part of an art trail linking it and Brough Park.
The trail, leading from Leek’s Nicholson Gallery into the School of Art new buildings and ending in Brough Park promises a visual feast as three free events come together – Leek’s annual Art in the Park weekend, the Buxton & Leek College Astound 2016 exhibition and an Arts Trail linking them together.
College tutor Suzanne Mellor said: “It’s a great chance for people to come inside the new School of Art building and see what fantastic facilities we now offer. Our artists and designers will be displaying their work here in college as part of the Astound 2016 Exhibition, as well as outside in the new piazza and there will be lots of affordable art on sale both here and at our stand in the park. We will be offering everything from textiles including lampshades and cushions to cards, sculpture, paintings and prints. There will be a cake café in the college Gallery and proceeds from this will go to Moorlands Dogs Rescue.
“Artists on all levels will be exhibiting and selling their work, from first year BTEC students who have captured the beauty of Brough Park in paintings to our degree students who are specialising in a variety of art forms from glass to fine art.”
Astound 2016, in the Nicholson Gallery, will see its official opening on Saturday May 21 at 10 am and will continue until June 11 with doors open from Monday to Saturday each week between 10 am and 3.30 pm. The exhibition will showcase the work of students on the Foundation Degree in Creative Art and Design.
