To celebrate National Careers Week 2024, Buxton & Leek College has welcomed a range of guest speakers to both its Leek and Buxton campuses. On Monday 4th March and Tuesday 5th March, the College had High Peak Baby Bank hold talks for their Health & Social Care and Education & Childcare students.
Kirsty Jackson, CEO of High Peak Baby Bank and BLC alumni, spoke to students about the inspirations for her charity and how she’s tailored the experience to diminish the barriers preventing children from receiving essential items. The talk covered everything the students would need to consider when going into charitable work, but also provided an in-depth insight into how the socio-economic issues they’re studying translate to a real organisation.
The visit gave learners the chance to explore the different occupational routes open to them and ask questions as they think about their next steps after college. They all engaged in passionate discussions following the talk and even began planning volunteering at the Baby Bank.
To finish the session Kirsty told students “If you find something you’re passionate about please stick at it, build a career around it, because there will always be people around ready to support and help you.”
