A NEW course starting at Buxton & Leek College in January offers students the chance to learn what makes people `tick`.
By popular demand, the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling will be on offer at both Leek and Buxton Campuses as a part time evening class. The course promises to offer a good grounding in counselling skills for anyone interested in developing them for work, relationships or simply life.
Classes will run on Wednesday evenings in Leek and Tuesdays in Buxton from 6.30pm until 9.30 pm for 20 weeks and tutors aim to build on the basic introduction to counselling offered this year. Topics covered include professional codes of ethics, confidentiality and health and safety issues as well as exploration of the three main branches of counselling: Psychodynamic, Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural.
A spokesman said: “The Tutor will help you to understand more about yourself, your own psychological and emotional development, and to think about the kinds of core personal qualities counsellors need to develop. You will also be introduced to the thinking of various grief and loss theorists and the kind of techniques grief counsellors use.”
Former student Sue Leighton, 45, from Chesterfield gained her Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling through Buxton & Leek College to give her more specialised skills to use in her job as a Family Support Worker.
She said: “The quality of teaching offered at Buxton and Leek is of the highest standard. The course was academic in nature but also contained experiential workshops that helped to ground the learning and course content. I found the tutors both supportive and friendly and felt that my learning was important to them. The workload was intense at times due to juggling work life, study and family life and took a fair amount of discipline to ensure I kept up with the work. My colleagues on the course were also supportive and we all offered each other encouragement.”
