WITH jobs in the creative and cultural sector expected to increase by a third by 2020, Buxton & Leek College are offering budding actors and actresses a new practical qualification in Performing Arts.
Starting next month in Buxton, a town renowned for its arts, music, opera and theatre productions, the new Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts could offer budding thespians just the break they need. For the two-year course has a strong practical element and, thanks to great links with Buxton’s famous Opera House and the University of Derby’s unique learning theatre, students have a great outlet for their talents.
Learners will also get a chance to perform at events such as Buxton’s annual Fringe Festival and at the National Student Drama Festival. The course can lead to further industry training at the University of Derby which is one of only 22 Drama Schools and Universities specialising in acting and theatre in the UK.
Entry requirements for the course are either a Level 2 Diploma or four GCSE passes at Grade C or above. Assistant Principal Jack Price, whose background is in Performing Arts said: “This course is brand new and a very exciting opportunity for those interested not simply in acting but also work as a theatre or front of house manager, screen or play writer or even set designer. Performing Arts training and qualifications at this level and degree level are becoming increasingly important, therefore this is a valuable and exciting opportunity for anyone interested in a career in the sector.”
And, according to a recent Manpower Group survey, students who study the arts subjects are more employable and are more likely to stay in employment and 86% of working actors have received professional training.
The course is ideal for young people aged 16 or above and applications for this September are still open. To apply call the college on 0800 074 0099 or visit www.blc.ac.uk.
