Boost for employers taking on apprentices

Employers of young apprentices are set to save thousands of pounds after the government abolished employer National Insurance contributions for virtually all apprentices under 25 years of age.

Buxton & Leek College has welcomed the change, which came into effect on 6 April 2016, as it will make hiring an apprentice even better value for employers and the exemption will apply to existing employers with apprentices as well as those taking on a new apprentice.

The College is working closely with local employers to ensure the workforce of the future can address skills gaps in many areas. And, as well as the traditional carpentry and joinery, hairdressing and painting and decorating, many higher level apprenticeships, in areas including logistics management and the legal profession are now available through the college as part of the University of Derby.

Buxton & Leek College’s Employer Engagement Officer, Kath Ferns, explained: “All sorts of careers now offer the chance to train `on the job` while earning a wage and gaining a real, recognised qualification. And, with many of these apprenticeship routes funded by the government, not only does the employer only have to make a small contribution but the student has no need to take out a loan or get into debt.

“There is no upper age limit for Apprenticeships and they offer a great opportunity to recruit the next generation of your workforce as well upskilling existing employees. Apprentices must be at least 16 years of age, meet entry requirements and will study the Apprenticeship along with gaining invaluable industry experience.

“Adult Apprentices will build on existing knowledge and are often a perfect way to upskill your current employees to more senior roles within your business and improve productivity.”

Apprenticeship course fees are often funded for trainees of any age dependant on their and the employer’s circumstances. For 16-24 year old Apprentices the AGE grant is available from the Government, For employers who qualify, Buxton & Leek College claim the grant with 100% is payable to the employer.
