Beauty students from Buxton & Leek College recently helped the ‘Breast Friends’ Group at Blythe House Hospice to produce their charity calendar for 2020.
Our Level 2 & Level 3 Beauty Therapists Gill Ashton, Nicki Sharp, Laine Mairs and their supervisor Jenny Kennerk supported the ladies by providing a range of services in preparation for the calendar photoshoot including: body paint, make-up, nails and hair styling.
Gill Ashton, a BLC Level 3 Beauty & Spa Therapy student, said:
“ I supported the Breast Friends charity event by painting sunflowers over the chest area of a lady who had had a double mastectomy due to cancer. I have looked after patient’s with breast cancer so I really felt compelled to volunteer for this cause. I really enjoyed working with the ladies from the group and hearing their stories. As a group, they had a really inspiring energy which rubbed off on me!”
Jenny Kennerk, The Salon Supervisor at BLC, said:
“I learned so much from these lovely ladies, their coping mechanism is amazing! Everyone that I spoke to said, ‘DON’T LET IT STOP YOU, CARRY ON!’. When I was working with them it really made me feel like you should seize the day and make it count. I have nothing but admiration for this group of very special friends.”
On the Monday following the photoshoot, the ladies came back to the Devonshire Spa and were kindly supported by our Higher Education Spa degree students to continue on the theme of therapy through water.

“It was an absolute honour and a privilege to be able to help facilitate this and our students thoroughly enjoyed helping with the prior preparation and meeting such a lovely group of inspirational ladies. The images are STUNNING! and I love the little individual mantras on each month. Thank you so much for giving our learners the opportunity to help with this fantastic project. What an incredible achievement and HUGE congratulations to the Breast Friends group”.
